Our values at work
IBMers value:
- Dedication to every client's success
- Innovation that matters, for our company and for the world
- Trust and personal responsibility in all relationships
In 2003, IBM undertook the first disciplined reexamination of our values in nearly 100 years. Through “ValuesJam” – an unprecedented 72-hour discussion on IBM’s global intranet – IBMers came together to define the essence of the company. The result? A set of core values – defined by IBMers for IBMers – that shape everything we do and every choice we make on behalf of the company.
The shared set of values helps us make decisions and, in the process, makes our company great. But their real influence occurs when we apply these values to our personal work and our interactions with one another and the wider world.

And, for each of the past 15 years (1993—2007), IBM has been granted more U.S. patents than any other company. IBM has invested approximately $5 billion per year in research, development and engineering since 1996, and has a current active portfolio of over 40,000 patents worldwide.

Society’s energy- and climate-related issues are at the top of our strategic agenda. At IBM, we recognise that information technology plays an extremely important role in solving these global issues. THE WAY WE THINK
What does it take to change the way the world works?
For nearly a century, businesses, institutions and individuals have sought a relationship with IBM because of the company's unique ability to conceptualise opportunities, to analyze developments and to re-imagine how the world could work. At the most basic level, IBM’s defining value over the years has not been our assets, our size or offerings. It has been the way we think.
“All the problems of the world could be settled easily if men were only willing to think.” – Thomas J. Watson

RIVERS OF DATA
Technology fights drought.
IBM and The Nature Conservancy are collaborating to conserve some of the world's great rivers by meshing extraordinary computing power and science-driven conservation.
The Nature Conservancy began the “Great Rivers Partnership” to help protect freshwater resources, transforming the way large water systems are preserved and protected. Now, IBM has joined the effort, providing high-performance supercomputing that allows researchers to simulate the behavior of river basins around the world. Information will help inform policy and management decisions that conserve the natural environment, and benefit the people who rely on these resources.
The project will initially focus on the large river systems: the Mississippi River Basin in the United States, Brazil’s Paraguay-Paraná River System, and China’s Yangtze River.

CYBERCOMMUTING
Since IBM first started experimenting with virtual worlds almost a year ago, progress has been rapid. We’ve already built virtual retail storefronts for Sears and Circuit City as well as new hire training environments for other forward-thinking clients. Our chairman, Sam Palmisano, even has his own avatar. IBM was the first company to host private regions of the Second Life Grid on its own servers, and is partnering with Linden Lab, Second Life creator, to develop open standards-based technologies that will enhance emerging virtual worlds.
We’re developing virtual commerce solutions through the use of a richer, more immersive Web environment, and solving business problems in ways never thought possible.
We’re even looking at the next generation of virtual, open community collaboration on the Web. We call it “3-D Internet,” and we believe it’s the next phase of the Internet's evolution.
