Our technology

Technology doesn't happen by itself. It's the people behind our technology, people a lot like you, who have contributed to IBM's phenomenal success. All our great ideas, all our innovations, have only been possible because of people who have dared to think outside the square.

Nowhere is this more evident than in our dedication to innovation at IBM Research. IBM Research's foundation lies in a wide array of scientific disciplines, award-winning researchers and global labs. Now, this research arm has expanded to include challenging ideas from our colleagues in academic and government research centres, as well as from our clients. IBM researchers are Nobel Prize winners, physical scientists, computer scientists, mathematicians, anthropologists, inventors and innovators, among many other things.

Our achievements
This is a taste of what IBMers have accomplished:

2005

• For the first time in the 50-year history of the Sydney University’s Science Foundation for Physics, IBMer Louise Davis has become the first woman to be appointed President.

2004

• Our partially complete Blue Gene/L supercomputer ascended to No. 4 on the top 500 supercomputer list, based on the Linpack benchmark test.
• We teamed with Cisco to design and build the world's most complex, programmable custom chip - the Cisco Silicon Packet Processor (SPP).

2003

• Dataquest named us the industry leader in custom ASICs chips for the fifth year in a row.

2001

• We introduced 'pixie dust', IBM's newest storage breakthrough, which uses new material to quadruple the areal density of hard disk drive products.
• We launched the world's quietest high-capacity mobile disk drive that also enables the longest battery life among leading notebook drives on the market.
