Energy Conservation Assessments
Most locations operated by IBM in Australia and New Zealand are designed and operated to use energy effectively. Therefore quick fix solutions that offer relatively cost effective and immediate benefits are not readily available.

As a significant initiative to use energy more effectively and identify options for reduction of greenhouse gas emissions at key energy using locations, during 2000 IBM commissioned an energy conservation assessment at two key leased sites in Sydney. The objective was to identify both immediate and longer term actions for reducing energy and water use at both those sites and to identify solutions that would have wider application.

Key action items focus on energy supply, power factor correction, modern electrical machinery, lighting, heating ventilation & air conditioning, water conservation, personnel computers, building energy management, sustainable energy purchase and facility equipment such as kittenettes, cafeteria and plant.

Promoting Energy Conservation
IBM was active in the following National Energy Management Programs during 2000:

  • Partner in the National Energy Star Program
  • National Greenhouse Challenge program

National Energy Star Partner
An Energy Star Partner since 1997, IBM Australia recommitted to participation and actively supported the program during 2000. The National Energy Star Program commits members to produce and market computer products with a defined energy efficiency for design and operational features.

Internally, IBM developed a communication program for new and existing employees to highlight the value of Energy Star within our operations. While IBM PCs in general are set up for employees with Energy Star enabled, the communications program ensures that employees are made aware of the benefits and are advised of the simple steps involved in enabling PCs for Energy Star.

Energy Use & Climate Change - Greenhouse Challenge
IBM became a signatory to the National Greenhouse Challenge program managed by the Australian Greenhouse Office in July, 2000. IBM in Australia, although a relatively moderate greenhouse gas emitter, is committed to pursue further means of abating emissions of greenhouse gases, including initiatives for avoidance of waste and more effective use of energy. These also represent key corporate goals for IBM globally as stated under the Corporate Environmental Affairs Policy. Under the program, IBM has developed an emissions inventory, prepared a plan, and is committing to implementation of key actions and to annually report performance to the Australian Greenhouse Office.
