IBM Australia export activities
IBM Australia has made substantial exports of services, software and hardware to the Asia Pacific region since the mid-1980s. In 2008, IBM generated export revenues of $A592 million through the sale of software, services and human capital to the Asia Pacific region.
In 2008, the following regional services centres contributed to this effort:
- The Asia Pacific Delivery Centre in Brisbane provides native language support to clients throughout the Asia Pacific region.
- Australia Development Laboratory (ADL) offers multi-lingual IBM software product support globally. More than 80% of its workforce is involved in exporting expertise and technology into the world market, making the ADL a growing contributor to Australia's exports and GDP.
- The international Queensland Call Centre is split between Brisbane and Varsity Lakes on the Gold Coast and employs more than 400 staff who have a range of multi-lingual skills. The Centre provides customer service support for Clients mainly in Japan and Australia but also to other AP countries (Korea, China, Thailand, Malaysia, Singapore and India).
- The Asia Pacific Computer Processing Centre operates in seven sites across New South Wales, ACT and Victoria. The multi-site centre forms part of the IBM's Asia Pacific data processing centre, servicing IBM's computer processing needs and those of many large customers in the region.
IBM investments
In 2008, The University of Ballarat and IBM Australia constructed a new $10.8 million IT Services Centre at the University of Ballarat Technology Park (UBTP). Made possible through the support of IBM Australia, the Victorian Government, the University of Ballarat and the City of Ballarat, the IT Services Centre will lead to the creation of 300 jobs. IBM has been a key factor in ensuring that the UBTP is Australia's leading regional technology park, with 1350 employees across 30 enterprises.
In addition, the Internet Commerce Security Laboratory (ICSL), a joint venture between the University of Ballarat, the Westpac Banking Corporation, IBM Australia, and the Victorian Government, opened in Ballarat in May 2008 . The ICSL will focus initially on two approaches to defeating financial cybercrime: profiling the activities of criminal groups by using data mining techniques, and developing transformational technologies to ensure that consumers and businesses can use internet commerce with confidence.
