IBM Hong Kong partnered with The University of Hong Kong (HKU) to hold the third annual "Apprentice at HKU" contest in March 2008. The contest was open to all students of HKU to debate on latest IT topic. The 3 winners were awarded with summer internships in forms of project-based assignments which provide students a valuable opportunity to apply their skills and earn practical experience. This would help them gain valuable insight for future academic or career decisions.
Over 100 applications were received from different disciplines. All applicants were invited to the first round group interview in February during which they were evaluated by experienced IBMers from Global Technology Services, Sales and Distribution, and Human Resources. Students were assigned to discuss the latest hot topics about IT (e.g. Facebook) and interviewers evaluated them on their English communication, analytical skills, innovation, leadership and teamwork.
8 finalists were shortlisted to enter the final round - Debate Contest. Their background was a balanced mix, covering Business, IT Technical, Arts and Laws. They were divided into 2 teams and presented with the debate topic around 2 weeks before the final contest, while their stances were only annouced in the week of the event.
On the day of the event, the 8 finalists had a very exciting and competitive debate on the topic "Everyone has the opportunity to take advantage of the booming Information Technology to improve life". Arguments covered a wide range of aspects of life, from daily life to business to environment issues. The teams also used visual materials like booklets and leaflets to assist their presentation. The panel judges, including representatives from IBM and HKU, had very positive feedback on the teams' performance.?
