EX.I.T.E. Program for young school girls
EX.I.T.E. (Exploring Interests in Technology and Engineering) Camps are designed to generate interest in mathematics and science. They provide young school girls with a better appreciation of the outstanding career opportunities available in technology and demonstrate to the participants that they can be successful in these fields.
In August 2005, IBM Hong Kong conducted its first EX.I.T.E. program for a group of Form 3 girls from selected secondary schools.
During the program, the girls participate in many hands-on activities including building their own web site. Each girl is given an IBM professional woman who becomes her mentor during the camp, with the relationship continued online through IBM's MentorPlace tool.
Part of the program is about forging links with schools: teachers and parents are encouraged to be involved in the program. They are invited to a briefing the week prior to the camp and to a celebration event at the end of the camp, where parents get to see first hand the web site and video that the girls created.
The EX.I.T.E. program also uses the IBM sponsored web site http://www.tryscience.com which is designed to make science more interesting and accessible to middle level school children. |
