Education & training - IBM MentorPlace

IBM MentorPlace ( http://www.mentorplace.org)

IBM MentorPlace is a comprehensive and structured online mentoring initiative that capitalises on the knowledge, dedication and enthusiasm of teachers and students, and the expertise and experience of IBM employees.

IBM MentorPlace is a secure, web-based internet site which enables students and mentors to collaborate on a range of activities and subjects. It involves IBM employees volunteering their time to mentor school students providing advice and guidance. This online mentor/student communication provides an opportunity for students to gain real insight in the business community and increase their confidence around future career options. IBM works with teachers and schools to ensure a meaningful "e-mentoring" experience.

Hong Kong IBM employees volunteered their time to become e-mentors to school students from secondary schools as part of the IBM MentorPlace program.

Mentors and students initially meet in person at IBM locations, which enables students to experience a "real" workplace. Following their workplace visit, students and mentors begin communicating online through a series of projects and activities, which in the first instance involves getting to know each other. They move on to topics such as leadership, careers, inventions and the role of technology in society.

MentorPlace is an IBM global community initiative and a key component of IBM's commitment to education and raising student achievement. IBM will continue facilitating future MentorPlace programs internationally.
