IBM Develops and Helps Launch Free “Teman Kanker”App to Connect the Cancer Support Ecosystem in Indonesia

App timed to celebrations for IBM’s 80 years of presence in Indonesia

Makassar, 18 September 2017 – IBM Indonesia, together with Yayasan Onkologi Anak Indonesia (Indonesia Childhood Cancer Foundation), launched a free application called “Teman Kanker” (Cancer Friends) that enables cancer patients to connect with doctors, survivors, physicians, other cancer patients, and other users of the application. The initiative aims to create a supportive ecosystem to help with the treatment progress of cancer patients, and promote early detection of cancer to encourage prevention.

The application, which runs on smartphone and PC, was developed by IBM Global Business Services as a community grant to the Indonesia Childhood Cancer Foundation.

The launch of the Teman Kanker Aapp, created by IBM on a pro bono basis as a service to the community, is part of the celebrations of IBM Indonesia’s long standing presence in Indonesia since 1937. During this time IBM has proven the company’s commitment to bring competitiveness and innovation to clients while supporting the nation’s objective to uplift the lives of the communities it serves. For example, in 1976, IBM Indonesia participated in Borobudur Temple's restoration by donating computer equipment to analyze the stones for refurbishment needs. This helped to increase the speed and accuracy of the restoration. Another moment was in 2014, when IBM Indonesia provided assistance for the data collection of thousands of Aceh Tsunami victims by providing technology called SIMBA.

“For eighty years, IBM Indonesia has been part of the country’s history, enabling progress through technology and innovation. We are committed to continue on our journey to transform and innovate, provide solutions, and contribute to the progress of Indonesia and its citizens, "said Vina D Kasim, Country Marketing Leader, IBM Indonesia. “We hope that the Teman Kanker application will be a very useful tool not only for cancer patients, but for everyone who wishes to know more about the cancer support ecosystem. “

“We are so grateful for the support from IBM and we believe that Teman Kanker will be beneficial not only to the cancer patient, but to the community at large; people who care about the cause, and need be educated about preventive care,” said Rahmi Thahir, Chairwoman of Yayasan Onkology Anak Indo (Indonesia Childhood Cancer Foundation).

The Teman Kanker application was launched at Pantai Losari in conjunction with Healthy Walk on September 17, participated by over 80,000 participants who walked along Losari Beach and downloaded the application together.
