A little about Zandu Pharmaceuticals.
Zandu is a company that manufactures Ayurvedic
products under the Zandu brand. Over 300 products are
produced at manufacturing plants across the country. The
company spends around Rs. 3 crores on research and
development to constantly introduce, upgrade and
standardise their products. Recently the US FDA accepted
their application for a new drug for Parkinson Disease – HP-200 and clinical trials are starting soon.
The company's growing pains.
To keep up with the growing market, Zandu has to
introduce new products from time to time. To achieve
this, it identified two key areas viz. business process
re-engineering and faster growth. SAP was seen as an
appropriate tool to achieve these objectives.
The IBM solution.
Recognising Zandu's needs, IBM recommended the
IBM eServer iSeries 825 with 3 processors and 3
Logical partitions, the primary partition: SAP R3
Production, the secondary partition: SAP R3
Development & BW development and the third partition:
SAP BW Production. For storage, IBM installed a 3582 - H17 tape drive and offered additional maintenance,
Smoothstart services and training to Zandu. Zandu also
released an order for SAP with 100 Users and decided
to partner with SISL for implementation.

The result - A healthy infrastructure.
With the eServer iSeries Zandu got on-demand features
like capacity switch on/off and pay-as-you-grow. Also,
scaling up and down to cyclical highs and lows was
much more cost-effective when compared to other
vendors. The server's capability of running more than
one operating system simultaneously with LPARs meant
that the company could run the various SAP modules
simultaneously. They could also run Linux in the future.
