IBM Research – India has come a long way since starting its journey in 1998. Continuing in the fine traditions of IBM Research, our India lab offers arguably the best opportunities in this region for real world impact, based on a foundation of excellence in research. The research activities at the lab cover a wide spectrum, including information management, analytics and optimizations, natural language processing, software engineering, systems and services management, next generation systems, high performance computing, and mobile-enabled solutions. These activities are largely directed towards two major focus areas, services research and breakthrough solutions for emerging markets. We aspire to become the leading research lab in the world in these two areas.
Our focus areas are derived from the dynamics of the unique environment in India, which has become a major center for services delivery globally and is emerging as one of the largest economies in the world. We are coming up with key innovations in the global delivery of IT based services including infrastructure, application and business process services and helping establish the emerging discipline of service science. In developing solutions for the region, we deal with the unique challenges that we face in India (e.g., massive scale of operations, price sensitivity, heterogeneity and noisiness of data, inadequacies of power and “wired” infrastructure) and target innovative solutions that have the potential to enable leapfrogging and be applied to the rest of the world.
We believe that in today’s world true innovation has to be open, collaborative, global and multi-disciplinary. We work closely with academic institutions, clients and other organizations. Taking collaborative innovation to the next level, we have established a Research Collaboratory with the Indian School of Business (ISB), one of the premier business schools in India. This Collaboratory is pushing the boundaries of service science, with a special focus on workforce management and analytics.
