The Center for Advanced Studies (CAS) initiative was established at IBM India Software Labs (ISL) in year 2003 at its Bangalore facility. The programme offers M.Tech, M.S ans Ph.D students from premier Engineering institutes in India access to IBM product technology and research areas, technical staff and other resources, with the goal of solving research problems of utmost importance to software developers. CAS concentrates efforts around key technology areas of SWG such as information management (covering DBB2 suite of products), network management (covering Tivoli suite), collaboration and workflow (covering Lotus suite), development tools (Rationale suite), transaction management (Websphere suite), autonomic computing, Web technology standards, pervasive and wireless computing and grid computing.
- To ensure timely and effective transfer of leading-edge research to IBM product development groups;
- To provide academics with access to problems of interest to IBM developers;
- To enable collaboration among academia, industry, government and IBM research centres as well as IBM development labs;
- To provide a venue for research sabbaticals;
- To become the leadership model within IBM for co-operative research.
CAS also entertains proposals relating to other aspects of computer science, including those involving theoretical work. CAS is continually initiating long-term projects in collaboration with other members of the research community. The results of these projects vary from research publications to prototypes and new directions for products.

IBM’s highly-selective SUR program awards computing equipment (servers, storage systems, personal computing products, etc.) to institutions of higher education around the world to facilitate research projects in areas of mutual interest including: the architecture of business and processes, privacy and security, supply chain management, information based medicine, deep computing, Grid Computing, Autonomic Computing, and storage solutions. The SUR awards also support the advancement of university projects by connecting top researchers in academia with IBM researchers, along with representatives from product development and solution provider communities. IBM supports over 50 SUR awards per year worldwide. The objective of the SUR Program is to sponsor collaborative research in areas of mutual interest to IBM and universities. The ultimate goal is to develop technical talent and technology leadership that fuels economic growth through fostering great science with great people. |

The IBM Ph.D. Fellowship Program is intended to honor exceptional Ph.D. students in disciplines of mutual interest, fundamental to innovation and on demand business, including: business, chemistry, computer science, electrical engineering, materials science, mathematics, mechanical engineering and physics, as well as emerging technical fields such as autonomic computing, nanotechnology, Grid computing, e-business on demand and services management, operations, research, and services science. |
|
The goal of this programme is to foster relationships between top research schools in India and India Research Labs (IRL), and encourage creating and dissemination of world class academic research in areas that are of interest to IBM. Historically foreign travel has been difficult and most university professors publish in journals or domestic conferences. In this programme, a lump sum of money is given to each institution to cover two or four international conference trips by faculty members. The grant is administered locally by the institution and all funding decisions are made locally. |
|
The goal of this program is to help graduate students disseminate their research results in reputed and selective international conferences. This grant is given to enhance India Research Lab’s (IRL) relationships with good graduate students and their advisors. The students route their requests through their advisors to the Relationship managers at IRL and the decision is made by a committee at IRL. The grant is sent to the university. To be eligible, the students should be the primary author of the paper. |
|
This program is designed for introducing fresh B.Tech and M.Tech students to research. IRL offers one year assignments to bright students that expose them to research before making important career decisions. Project trainees typically work on challenging real-world research problems faced by the IT community. At the end of the assignment, many of them go on for graduate studies. |
|
India Research Labs and India Software Labs offer internships to bright students of leading technical universities in India and abroad. This provides an opportunity for the students to gain industry experience and exposure to world class technologies. During the internship, students work on projects related to current activities at IRL/ISL and solve problems with the help of their mentors. |
|
The goal of this program is to establish collaborations with reputed faculty in institutions worldwide. The visitor program is expected to enhance the quality of research at IRL, help IRL employees in their professional development, attract graduate students from reputed universities, and give an opportunity for a faculty member an experience of working in an IRL environment. |
|
India Research Labs and India Software Labs sponsor leading technical events and conferences in India in the field of Information Technology. The level of sponsorships depends upon the relevance of the event to IRL/ISL. Typically events sponsored are conferences, workshops and graduate students events. |

The Extreme Blue™ program is IBM’s premier internship for top-notch students pursuing software development and MBA degrees. If you’re chosen for the program, you become part of a team working in one of a dozen Extreme Blue labs around the world. Your team’s challenge: develop the technology and business plan for a new product or service that addresses an existing market challenge. Through the program, interns have submitted more than 270 patent disclosures and contributed six projects to the open source community, two for alphaWorks®, and helped create solutions for key clients and bring-to-market the next generation of IBM products. Not bad for just 12 weeks.
Unlike other intern programs that may relegate you to work on outdated technology, Extreme Blue teams work on leading technology that helps grow your skills and make you a more attractive candidate in the technology field. Interns in this high-performance environment get to roll up their sleeves and work with "hot" technology, like Linux®, Grid computing, RFID, and Web services.

As part of IBM’s drive to help build IT skills with the student community, IBM has collaborated with Visveswaraiah Technological University (VTU) for their e-Learning initiative. Under this e-Learning initiative, IBM is delivering two courses, using VTU’s edu-satellite (EDUSAT) network - Enterprise Database Fundamentals (leading to DB2 certification) and J2EE Programming using Eclipse and WSAD (leading to WebSphere Studio Application Developer certification). What is noteworthy is that these lectures are transmitted to 120 participating Engineering Colleges (under VTU) in Karnataka, reaching 10,500 students. Nearly 76% of the Lectures via EDUSAT, are delivered by IBM representatives. |
|
The objective of Curriculum lectures and guest lectures programs is to build a relationships with good universities and schools on mutual value in line with the common University Relations objectives. IBMers deliver these lectures in Universities or Schools on various technology and non-technology areas of IBM’s interest. The lectures delivered include Innovation, SOA, Linux, RFID etc. |
