Energy Efficiency
As the Official Technology Partner of the Australian Open we help Tennis Australia cope with significant year to year growth in website traffic, unpredictable spikes in traffic, are able to handle 100x the year round traffic, deal with high energy costs and at the same time meet the needs of the increasingly internet savvy tennis fan and do so in an affordable manner.
A major part of helping Tennis Australia to cope with these challenges is through virtualisation and since 2006, IBM virtualisation technology has been able to help the Australian Open and the other major grand slams consolidate their servers from 60 servers to 6 POWER6 p6 550 Express servers, which are more energy efficient. This has reduced energy consumption by 40% and cooling load by 48%. As well as helping the Grand Slams achieve considerable improvements in energy efficiency, this has generated significant financial savings. While visits to the infrastructure that supports Australianopen.com have increased by 26%, the cost of each visit has been reduced by 38% over the same period. IBM implemented server virtualisation to combat ageing data centres, rising energy costs and increased server density.
IBM has also helped other organisations consolidate to save. IBM helped Sustainability Victoria reduce power consumption by a massive 68% and attain the highest energy efficiency rankings through a combination of virtualisation and migration to IBM blade servers.
