Server Support for ThinkPad® Fingerprint Readers Organisations using Microsoft® Corporation’s Windows® Domain technology may be interested in enabling Domain-based roaming using a fingerprint as the logon credential. They may also be interested in enabling corporate applications to either use fingerprints in addition to or in place of user id/password for authentication. ThinkVantage fingerprint software offers a BioAPI-compliant module which enables integration with third-party software.
We have established partnerships with third-party software vendors to give our customers the ability to implement server-based biometric authentication solutions for enterprise-level implementations. Some of the features of a client-server implementation could include:
- Centralised administration and management of fingerprint templates. These templates could serve to allow users to access network resources from any PC with a ThinkPad Integrated Fingerprint Reader or compatible device. [Note: In a domain environment, password policies could be linked to a specific user's fingerprint templates to help create and implement a password-less environment.] Additional features could include Active Directory support.
- Integration with other forms of authentication, such as smart cards (sold separately) or physical security solutions such as entry into a building (third-party offering). In one scenario, the user could insert their smart card and swipe their finger on their PC to gain access to network resources.
- Integration with third-party Identity Management applications in order to control and manage access to corporate applications with a biometric device in addition to or in lieu of the traditional password.

June 2005 "Hard-nosed IT shops will undoubtedly prefer the ThinkPad [X41] with its wealth of management and security features. For instance, it comes with biometric security, in which you can set the device to require a fingerprint swipe using the included fingerprint reader before either booting or logging on to Windows. The fingerprint capability can even work in lieu of application and Web site passwords."
