Linux on eServer p5 and pSeries
|
| IBM eServer p5 and pSeries servers offer reliability, availability
and serviceability characteristics unique to Linux
and provides mission-critical applications a higher
level of support than other 32- or 64-bit environments.

Logical
partitioning and virtualisation; Linux, AIX 5L
or both!
pSeries servers provide the capability to run
Linux, AIX 5L or both on a single server, future-proofing
your investment. Logical partitioning on eServer
p5 and pSeries servers provides a cost-effective
platform for enterprise workloads while supporting
Open Source standards and solutions—especially
important for companies that want to further enhance
world-class UNIX OS-based environments with Linux.
Additionally, with eServer p5 systems, the new
virtualisation features allow the capability to
support dynamic LPARs, micro-partitions, virtual
I/O support, and dynamic resource management.
This further enhances system efficiencies to provide
high system utilisation.
pSeries and p5 Linux servers provide large memory
capabilities, advanced floating point computing,
64-bit addressability and tuned compilers. These
features allow companies to take full advantage
of POWER4 and POWER5 technology to deliver high-performance
applications, backed by a proven architecture.
An 8-way p650 achieved leading Linux results
on the STREAM benchmark which is a synthetic
program written in FORTRAN that measures sustainable
memory bandwidth (in MB/s) and the corresponding
computation rate for simple vector kernels.
POWER5 systems running Linux have recently beaten
the best of breed performers in SPECweb99 by
27%, SPECsfs by 158%, and Netbench by 55% proving
the power of Linux on p5 systems.

Samba
file and print server management Samba
runs on Linux platforms but can speak to Windows
clients like a native Windows server. It allows
a Linux system to move into a Windows "Network
Neighborhood" without causing a stir. At the same
time, Windows users can access file and print
services without knowing that those services are
offered by a Linux host. |
