IBM eServer zSeries: networking
Your e-business can drive explosive transaction environments, require dynamic responsiveness, and in some cases, cause a proliferation of middle-tier application servers and gateways surrounding the mainframe to address a variety of application, database, web serving, grid computing, and utility services (for example, e-mail, printing, etc). Meeting the needs of this on demand operating environment requires a server with mainframe credentials and on demand integration that provides:
  • Optimised performance
  • Real time responsiveness managed to business priorities
  • Quality of service
  • Scalable, non-disruptive capacity increase for unexpected workload
  • Secure connections among endpoints
  • Always available application access
  • Dynamic flexibility to respond to changing business needs

Continual advances in zSeries hardware and its TCP/IP networking capabilities reenforce the mainframe's integral role in your on demand operating environment, including recent additions for gridcomputing support and Infrastructure Simplification. The zSeries features an enhanced I/O subsystem and high performance adapter features balanced with its scalable number of processors, main memory, availability and virtualisation technologies, plus advanced networking capabilities on supporting environments including z/OS, z/OS.e (US), z/VM, Linux, TPF (US), and VSE/ESA. With an expanding family of high performance OSA-Express networking features at up to Gigabit speeds to connect the outside world, and leading edge HiperSockets for advanced virtual server-to-virtual server networking at memory speed bandwidth and close to zero latency, the zSeries can help provide the connections you need within the mainframe, between zSeries and other servers, and out to customers, users, and partners.

The S/390 Parallel Enterprise Servers Generation 5 and Generation 6 provide an entry level for the high-speed OSA-Express networking features but do not provide the zArchitecture exclusive feature - HiperSockets .

New OSA-Express Integrated Console Controller (US) function on z890 and z990 is designed to support up to 120 console sessions for Initial Program Load and z/OS, z/OS.e, z/VM, VSE/ESA, and TPF operational consoles.

The IBM 2074 Model 3 Console Support Controller (US), which uses TCP/IP technology is designed to provide up to 96 console sessions and help reduce the number of console controllers for z800, z900 and S/390.
