Case Study

Founded in 1991, PT Bank Muamalat Tbk was the first bank in Indonesia to use a system of banking that adheres to Islamic law, or Sharia. With headquarters in Jakarta, Bank Muamalat provides banking services to more than 2.5 million customers through 275 outlets across 33 provinces in Indonesia. The bank’s alliance network includes 32,000 ATMs and 95,000 debit merchants across the country. The bank added 150 ATMs in 2010 and is adding 261 more in 2011.

Challenge
To deliver more efficient banking services to customers across the country, Bank Muamalat set out to implement WAY4™ Switch and Oracle® Database software, a new high-volume platform for ATMs and other electronic channels such as mobile banking and EDC/POS. To ensure optimal processing power and stability for this mission-critical back-end solution, Bank Muamalat needed a robust new server solution. The bank also wanted to reduce software licensing expenses for its Oracle Database software while ensuring industry-leading performance.

Solution
Working with IBM Premier Business Partner Anabatic Technologies, Bank Muamalat chose an IBM solution over competing offerings from HP and Sun. The bank implemented an IBM Power 750 Express server running IBM AIX to power the Way4 Switch application, providing high performance and near continuous availability as well as energy efficiency and virtualization capabilities. The exceptional performance of the IBM POWER7® processor technology used by the Power 750 Express server allows the bank to run Oracle Database with fewer processors, resulting in lower per-core software licensing costs.
