The issues
IT and business efficiency
To assist you in planning for your configuration to deploy WebCT Campus Edition 6, IBM and WebCT have worked to identify eServer® xSeries® reference configurations which ensure reliability, ease of implementation and innovation for your e-learning environment. IBM has worked with WebCT to provide xSeries systems tested to support WebCT Vista and Campus Edition. This includes reference configurations to deploy WebCT Campus Edition 6.

The benchmark
Commitment to reliability and open standards
WebCT and IBM see Red Hat Linux® and the eServer xSeries as a low cost, scalable solution for your migration to Campus Edition 6. Built on a strong technical foundation, WebCT Campus Edition 6 in conjunction with IBM pretested hardware and migration services provides a innovative, cost-effective solution based on:
  • J2EE™ and Web services standards.
  • Open and interoperable content standards around SCORM (Sharable Content Object Reference Model).
  • Open standards and adoption of RedHat Linux
  • Competitive low cost scalable xSeries servers.
  • Opportunities for innovation with WebSphere Portal, collaboration tools, DMDS, ThinkPad® University, Integrated Technology Services and Global Business Services.

The components
Improve. Innovate. Facilitate.
WebCT Campus Edition 6 is moving from a flat file database to a relational database. A relational database, either Oracle or Microsoft SQL Server, is required in order to run WebCT Campus Edition 6.

In addition, WebCT is moving from the Apache Web server to the BEA WebLogic application server. The combination of these two changes will make your deployment much more reliable and your data safer. The recommended method for deploying WebCT Campus Edition 6 is a two server configuration, with one server dedicated to the application and another dedicated to the database.

IBM has worked with WebCT to provide xSeries systems tested to support WebCT applications. Our newest line of xSeries servers, features X3 architecture to deliver mainframe-inspired innovation to the industry-standard x86 server market combining break-through performance, mission-critical availability and unmatched modular scalability.

Our migration solution may also require:
  • A license for Oracle or SQL.
  • Red Hat Linux or Microsoft® Windows® 2000.
  • WebCT product related migration services.
  • IBM Global Business Services for migration.

The implementation
Upgrade to improve expansion capabilities
Nottingham University upgraded their version of WebCT Campus Edition (CE) to Campus Edition 6. With its improved usability and an enhanced interface, WebCT Campus Edition 6 provides University of Nottingham with an e-learning platform that scales easily to the needs of large higher learning institutions. This flexibility and ease of use becomes the framework for a multitude of teaching applications, including course-specific discussion forums, progress monitoring tools, group research projects and more convenient access to shared teaching and reference resources. By expanding its use they expect to see immediate benefits in terms of fully integrating WebCT with the university's current IT infrastructure, including the student and academic online information portal.

The cost of ownership
Maintaining your bottom line

  • Reduce maintenance costs and lower costs for physical hardware.
  • Extend system lifetime for long-term savings.
  • Enable your infrastructure to grow without expanding your bottom-line investments.
