IBM Insurance Application Architecture

Executive summary Business view Technical details

The issues
The right technology
Develop comprehensive information systems that integrate legacy and disparate information systems. IBM Insurance Application Architecture includes a business model; a design model of components, interfaces and messages; a generic design framework for product definition and agreement administration; and design models for the creation of data warehouses.

The benchmark
Rely on IBM
IBM Insurance Application Architecture (IAA) offers financial services content, full trace ability and model management facilities. In particular, it provides full support for XML messaging, external design models for EJB-based components and mapping of IAA to ACORD Life specification.

IBM developed this architecture over a number of years in cooperation with over 40 insurance companies.

The components
Proven components
Both IBM and a number of independent software vendors have developed applications that adhere to IAA standards.
  • Insurance Information Warehouse (IIW) is an IAA-based enterprise-wide data warehouse for the financial services industry.
  • Client Information Integration Solution (CIIS) provides an operational data store for all client information on an enterprise-wide basis.
  • IBM WebSphere® MQ can deliver the capability to implement a full message hub in diverse financial services environments.

We offer a broad range of services, including:
  • Enterprise analysis.
  • Business process analysis (for business process re-engineering).
  • Data warehousing analysis and implementation.
  • Application design.
  • Business area analysis- customer relationship management, insurance agreements, and intermediaries management).
  • Insurance product analysis- product modeling.
  • Business-rules capture and analysis.
  • Component development- in particular, the generic product and agreement framework defined by the specification framework.
  • Integration through XML.
  • Education.

The implementation
Case Study: Hyundai Marine & Fire Insurance
Hyundai Marine and Fire Insurance Co. of Seoul is confronting the needed changes to their systems head-on. They chose IBM Insurance Application Architecture as the starting point for creating a system with flexibility.

With limited manpower, Hyundai needed a simpler, less labour-intensive way to explore and develop new systems.

IAA has helped Hyundai to develop a client-centric system to ease the administrative processes of insurance planning, quotation, contracts, endorsements and claims. Previously, they were working with 3,270 terminal screens. Now, user-friendliness is achieved because the applications' graphical user interfaces employ personalised menus and controllable navigation.

The cost of ownership
Lower your total cost of ownership
IBM Insurance Application Architecture can help you lower your total cost of ownership.
  • Integrates with legacy systems from different platforms to leverage your previous investments.
  • Compatible with widely-used design tools and methodologies, supporting open-standards-based technologies.
  • Maximises implementation speed while minimising risk and downtime.
